Front Street

This listing is unknown because of a lack of number: (1791) S. Front St., Fulman, Jeremiah, barber

(1785) #638, no listing
#313 S. Front St., Alexander, Charles, labourer
This alignment is speculative, based on the Duffield and Gault listings at #633 and #634. Clearly, though, Biddle makes a massive jump in numbers from #317 to #349, which is usually explained by the presence of a church or something similar, which MacPherson did not always assign numbers. However, no church is yet known to have been there.

The alignments around here are all speculative until more information arrives; until then I have not bothered to try to finely calculate who goes where, which has left the following three addresses:

(1791) #473 S. Front St., Miller, Matthias, labourer

(1785) #706, Brown, Conrad
#475 S. Front St., Brown, Conrad, tavernkeeper
There is a wild difference in number between Conrad Brown at #475 in 1791 and Joseph Garwood at #537 in that year, given the three-number difference in their numbers in the 1785 numbering system. I have not attempted to explain this, given the somewhat remote location and lack of evidence.

(1785) #322 Pine Street, Phillips, John

(1785) #894 Front Street, Roberts, John
(1785) #11 Pine Street, Robertson, John, shopkeeper
Theoretically, at the southwestern corner. If this alignment is correct, #895 Pine Street (merchant Robert Stephenson in 1785, John Carson in 1791) would be at about the northwestern corner, where John Phillips is placed here.
(1791) #184 S. Front St., Cole, Elizabeth, widow
(1791) #184 S. Front St., Robeson, Ann, shopkeeper

(1785) Guerney, Francis, merchant, corner of Pine and Front
Listed correctly by MacPherson at the corner of Union and Front (#1 Union Street); see notes for that.

(1785) Course, Mrs., gentlewoman, corner of Pine and Front

BETWEEN PINE AND SPRUCE, EAST SIDE (going south)

Union Street did not continue through Front Street, and so there was no corner on the east side of Front. White did break some of the listings on this side down as being specifically between Pine and Union or between Union and Spruce. Many of the 1791 alignments are speculative.

Number #592 is at the corner in 1785, but #217, which seems to line up with #591, may be the corner in 1791; this is uncertain.

By the numbering, on the northeastern corner.
(1791) #165 S. Front St., O'Neall, Arthur J., grocer, also at 165 S. Water St.

The jump in numbering for both Front and Spruce suggest that there was no inhabited dwelling for any other corner in 1785, though in 1791 there was this possibility for the southeastern corner:
(1791) #167 S. Front St., Watkins, William, tobacconist, also at 166 S. Water St.
On the western corners in 1791 there were also no numbers assigned.

(1785) #553, Ashburn, Widow
(1791) #143 S. Front St., Gordon, Peter, cordwainer

(1785) #554, vacant or residents would not give name
This is a sort of extra number in the MacPherson 1785 listing-- he did list it as such, but this or one of the preceding four numbers is probably a backbuilding or something similar, which Biddle would not have numbered.

This property is part of another of these anomalies in which MacPherson assigned three numbers to what Biddle assigned four.

(1785) #925, Flahavan & Wilcox, merchants
(1791) #130 S. Front St., Lownes, Joseph, silversmith

(1785) #926, Panier, Onfray
(1791) #128 S. Front St., Dilworth, Samuel, ironmonger

(1785) #927, Sheilds, Thomas
(1785) Shields, Thomas, goldsmith, Front between Spruce and Walnut
Thomas Shields (1742-1819) was a well-known silversmith in Philadelphia. A stock buckle (a buckle which a man would use to fasten his neck-cloth, called a stock) is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and is illustrated and discussed in Beatrice Garvan's Federal Philadelphia: The Athens of the Western World, pp.26-27, though the caption-writer erroneously confused the gold buckle also shown on the page with the silver stock buckle by Shields. It is also interesting that he and silversmith John David, another well-known silversmith of 18th century Philadelphia, were next-door neighbors.

(1785) #930, Beat, Amos
Based on the matchups it seems clear that this property, #931 or #932 next door were part of an adjoining property, since there is no Biddle number for one of these properties.

CORNER OF FRONT AND ARCH

(1785) #35 Front Street, #8 Arch Street, Lynn, Widow
(1785) Linds, Miss, boardinghouse, corner of Arch and Front
Despite the apparent contradiction of the terms "Miss" and "Widow," based on the double-listing in MacPherson, Widow Lynn was at the corner (southwestern) and was almost certainly the "Miss Linds" referred to by White as being on a corner of this intersection.
Based on the double-listing, on the southwestern corner.

(1785) Nevill, Elizabeth, prepares medicines against the ague & c., corner of Arch and Front
Not listed in MacPherson, though a Thomas Neville is listed just to the south of the southeastern corner at #446 Front Street (between Market and Arch, according to White). This, therefore, may have been part of the property at the southeastern corner, with, perhaps, the Nevilles renting the more southerly part.

(1785) Waln, Robert, merchant, Front between Arch and Race
A marvelous mahogany tambour desk (a desk which closes like a roll-top desk, but which closes in a simple arc rather than in an S-curve), made for merchant Robert Waln, is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and is illustrated and discussed in Beatrice Garvan's Federal Philadelphia: The Athens of the Western World, pp.84-85. This desk is attributed to Daniel Trotter (d.1800), who worked on Water Street above Arch, but who was also listed in Elfreth's Alley-- possibly one was his workshop and one his home-- and possibly also his apprentice (and later, partner) Ephraim Haines (1775-1837). This desk is remarkable for several reasons, but most of all for the script W executed in silver on each side and the silver candle-arms mounted to the top on each side.
According to Garvan, in the years between 1785 and 1800, he married, built a new house on 2nd Street which was wallpapered and furnished from all the best shops, and ordered a new carriage from David Clark (6th between Market and Chestnut).

Gilbert Gaw, windsor chair maker, lived on this side of this block in the 1790s; according to his advertisements, he was at #90 N. Front St., twelve doors above Mulberry or Arch St.

(1785) Wetherill, Samuel, shopkeeper, Front between Arch and Race

CORNER OF FRONT AND RACE

(1785) #61, Downes, William
The numbering suggests he was on the southwestern corner.
(1791) #118 N. Front St., Grans, William, shopkeeper

(1785) #62 Front Street, #429 Race Street, Moulder, William, clerk of the Market
(1785) Moulder, William, clerk of the city market, corner of Race and Front
By the numbering, on the northwestern corner.
(1791) #120 N. Front St., Wallace, Robert, merchant

(1785) #413 Front Street, Satsbury, John
Wadman or Wodman at the southeastern corner would imply that #413 was at the northeastern corner, but so, too, would William Moulder imply that #430 Race Street, the Widow Coppuck, was at that corner. This remains unclear, though the 1791 listing seems to make clear, at least, that John Salsberry was on the northeastern corner.
(1791) #139 N. Front St., Salsberry, John, blockmaker, also at 134 N. Water St.

(1785) #414 Front Street, Wadman, Pedoe

(1785) Wheeler, Samuel, gentleman, Front between Race and Vine
This may be the same Samuel Wheeler who made the iron balcony of Congress Hall (next to Independence Hall) and signed and dated it 1788, and the gate of Christ Church on 2nd St. which is also signed and dated 1795. (See Early American Ironware, by Kauffman.)

CORNER OF FRONT AND VINE

(1785) #92 Front Street, #10 Vine Street, Bonnell, Charles
(1785) Bonnell, Charles, cooper, corner of Vine and Front
By the numbering, on the southwestern corner. This would mean that #11 Vine Street, the
Widow Bonnell, who was also listed as being on the corner, was also at the southwestern corner; Charles' mother, perhaps?
(1785) #11 Vine Street, Bonnell, Widow
(1785) Bonnell, Sarah, shopkeeper, corner of Vine and Front
(1791) #180 N. Front St., Bonnell, Charles, cooper, also at 16 Vine St.

(1785) #93 Front Street, #463 Vine Street, West, William, merchant
By the numbering, on the northwestern corner.
(1791) #182 N. Front St., West, William, merchant, also at 161 N. Water St.

(1785) #376 and 377 Front Street, vacant or residents would not give name
By implication, one or both of these would have occupied the northeastern corner. There is, however, no such "vacant" listing at the corresponding listing for Vine Street, which would be #464 or #465. #464 is not listed; #465 is one Charles West.
(1791) #209 N. Front St., Butler, Anthony, merchant

(1785) #378 Front Street, #9 Vine Street, Read, James
By the numbering, on the southeastern corner.
(1791) #207 N. Front St., Magens, Thomas, merchant

(1785) Augustus, Lewis, shopkeeper, corner of Vine and Front
(1785) Mustee, Mr., merchant, corner of Vine and Front

BETWEEN VINE AND CALLOWHILL, EAST SIDE (going south)

The dividing line between the east and west sides of this block is based on two match-ups: #354, Joseph Palmer, double-listed at the southeastern corner of Callowhill, Water and Front Streets, and #353, John Britton, also double-listed by MacPherson, at the northeast corner. Unfortunately White's other listings for this intersection match no one in MacPherson, and of course White did not work on cross streets further north. He did list people as living near, below or above Pool's Bridge, which lay about half a block further north, just north of Margaretta Street, and there are a few double-listings in MacPherson which help narrow it down a little bit, who was where. None of the 1791 listings match the 1785s.

(1785) #355, Masters, William, magistrate

(1785) Zimmerman, Mr., schoolmaster, Front between Vine and Callowhill

(1785) #374, Styles, William
(1785) #376, vacant or residents would not give name

1791 LISTINGS FOR BETWEEN VINE AND CALLOWHILL, EAST SIDE:

(1791) #241 N. Front St., Lumm, Hannah, widow
(1791) #241 N. Front St., Wood, Mary, widow
(1791) #255 N. Front St., Britton, Thomas, lumber merchant [and state representative for the County of Philadelphia]

BETWEEN VINE AND CALLOWHILL, WEST SIDE (going north)

(1791) #184 N. Front St., Clark, Jacob, grocer This listing is a mystery; multiple listings on either side line up very well, but there is no 1785 number, assigned or not, for this address. This implies a difference in the numbering system, in which Biddle assigned a number to what MacPherson considered part of an adjoining property, but further research may turn up some other explanation.

(1785) #94, West, Charles
(1785) West, Charles, merchant, Front between Vine and Callowhill
(1791) #186 N. Front St., West, Charles, gentleman

(1791) #200 N. Front St., Fenton, Ann, schoolmistress
(1791) #200 N. Front St., Town, John, boat builder

(1785) #104, Copperthwaite, Joseph

(1791) #204 N. Front St., Cowperthwaite, Joseph, gentleman

(1785) #105, Fox, Edward, attorney at law
This listing, too, is something of a mystery, since adjoining numbers line up well, but there is no 1791 number for this address. This is probably one of those cases in which MacPherson assigned a number to a backbuilding that was rented out, but to which Biddle did not, of course, assign a number.

CORNER OF FRONT AND CALLOWHILL

SOUTHWESTERN CORNER
(1785) #122 Front Street, Nixon, John
(1785) Nixson, Andrew, innkeeper, corner of Callowhill and Front
(1785) #9 Callowhill Street, Nixon, Andrew
By the numbering (and the matchup of last names), on the southwestern corner. Whether there actually were two men, John and Andrew, or whether a mistake was made with one man's first name, is still unknown.

(1785) #10 Callowhill Street, Baker, Widow
(1785) Baker, Mrs., gentlewoman, corner of Callowhill and Front
By the numbers and the matchups with White's listings for those at this corner, she and James Vanosten, below, would have been at the same corner as the Nixon inn, above.

(1785) #11 Callowhill Street, Vanosten, James
(1785) Vannost, James, house carpenter, corner of Callowhill and Front

The 1791 Biddle number for this corner is not known; by the northwestern corner's number this address should be #240; by the numbering system it should be #236, neither of which appears in the 1791 directory. It could be either of these:
(1791) #236 N. Front St., Downing, Samuel, grocer
(1791) #238 N. Front St., Hobart, Charles, leather dresser

NORTHWESTERN CORNER
(1785) #123 Front Street, #479 Callowhill Street, Graham, William
By the numbering, on the northwestern corner.
(1791) #242 N. Front St., Graham, William, gentleman

NORTHEASTERN CORNER
(1785) #353 Front Street, #480 Callowhill Street, Britton, John
By the numbering, on the northeastern corner.
(1791) #259 N. Front St., Britton, John, lumber merchant

SOUTHEASTERN CORNER
(1785) #354 Front Street, #8 Callowhill Street, Palmer, Joseph, merchant
By the numbering (and the implication of the inclusion of Water Street) on the southeastern corner. This means he would have been on the same property as Robert Ross.
(1785) #7 Callowhill Street, Ross, Robert
(1785) Ross, Robert, broker, corner of Callowhill and Front
(1791) #257 N. Front St., Saltar, Sarah, widow

BEYOND CALLOWHILL TO THE NORTH

The evidence for exactly where these listings were is sparse & confusing, so these are all lumped together, for the moment. The early ones are on the west side (all the even numbers in the 1791 listings are on the west side, all the odd 1791 numbers are on the east side).

An 18th century redware pitcher was dug up at Pennsylvania Hospital with the initials C P scratched in the base, and the caption of the piece, which is on display inside the entrance at 8th and Spruce Streets, speculates that it may have been made by Piercy. The caption states that his working dates in Philadelphia were 1764 to 1793.

NOTES

According to the 1909 "Publication No. 5" of the City Historical Society of Philadelphia, "At No. 918 South Front Street is what appears to be half a house. It is very old, doubtlessly of Swedish origin, and in consequence we do not know the reason for its peculiar style of architecture. It might be supposed to be accidental, but for the fact that at 614 South Front Street stands another, and probably these two are not the only 'half-houses' in the neighborhood." The author, M. Antonia Lynch, was wrong about such houses being of Swedish origin; gambrel-roof houses built in halves like that were once relatively common in other, non-Swedish areas of the city, too.

Sparks' shot-making establishment was on Front Street. Of this only the well-known tower remains. Publication No. 5 notes that there was an old cemetery behind the tower, and that when the publication was written in the early 20th century only three headstones were at all visible. They were dug out and proved to be the headstones of Elizabeth Snell, wife of Captain James Snell, who died at age 40 on April 29, 1798; Elizabeth McKechnie, wife of Lundin McKechnie, who died May 24, 1797, and Elizabeth Glensey, daughter of Richard and Isabelle Glensey, who died in 1800 at the age of 86. Ms. Lynch, however, did not say what, if anything, was done with these headstones or graves.

The same publication remarked that the home of early U.S. naval hero Stephen Decatur was at #611 S. Front Street (probably the modern numbering).

(same) "784 South Front Street, bearing the date of 1763 on the wall, was the residence of George Ord, who was born in this house, and died here January 24, 1866, at the age of eighty-four. He was President of the Academy of Natural Sciences, and an active member of the American Philosophical Society and other scientific and literary associations.

(same) "The Weccacoe Fire Company, founded May 1, 1800, was located first at the corner of Front and Christian Streets; next at the corner of Union Alley and Front Street; then at the Prime Street landing, and finally in 1817 was granted permission by the Commissioners to use the lot in front of their hall, on Second Street."

According to Rum Punch and Revolution by Peter Thompson, the Blue Anchor tavern stood in the middle of Front Street and had to be demolished to allow the street to go through. (p.22) The work did not nail down where on Front Street it stood, however.

(same source) Samuel Carpenter (brother of Joshua Carpenter who built Tun Tavern) built two taverns on the east side of Front Street: the Globe Tavern and Carpenter's Coffeehouse. (p.28) Hannah Hubbard was the tenant of the Globe in 1715-1716, (p.64) and one Grimstone Boude was its tenant for almost 20 years, until his death. (p.31)

(same) The Pennypot Tavern, one of two standing already when Philadelphia was founded, stood at Pegg's Run (a creek), near Front Street just north of Vine. Shipbuilder James West arrived in Philadelphia in 1684 and bought the Pennypot in 1689. (p.28-29)

(same) Alice Guest (d.1705) who established the Crooked Billet Tavern, owned a house by the time of her death on the west side of Front Street. (p.31)
